Swimming Pools: Pool Chemical Treatments

Weekly Chemical Treatments For Your Pool

Recommendations for a pool size of 14,000 Gallons Or 24’ Round.

  1. Evening: After sun has set, shock the pool using 1½ lbs. of Granular Shock or 1½ gallons of Liquid Shock. Always dissolve granular shock in a bucket before adding chemical to the pool. Do not swim for 12 hours after shocking the pool. Do not replace the solar cover onto the pool for at least 12 hours.
  2. Evening: Add 3 oz. of Algaecide (Control 40 or 60).
  3. Evening: Add (1) 3" tablet to the skimmer. Maintain 1 tablet in the skimmer at all
times. (When pool water becomes very warm, add 1 additional tablet.)
  4. Evening or Morning: Once a week, test the pool water. The free chlorine level should be at 1-2 ppm.
The pH should register at 7.2-7.6. The total alkalinity should read 90-125.
  5. Weekly (or as pressure indicates): Backwash filter when pressure reaches 5-7 LBS. above normal. After backwashing filter, place (1) Claritab in the skimmer. If the pool was filled with hard water, also add (1) Ferritab in the skimmer.
For Green Water:

Green water is caused by algae in the pool. First, brush down the sides of the pool and the bottom with a pool brush or vacuum head. Next, shock the pool with double the dosage. If you normally shock with 1 lb. of shock, use 2 lbs. Also, add 18 oz. of a strong algaecide, such as Pool Season's Concentrated Kill or Swimfree's Black Algeacide. Depending upon the amount of algae that is in the pool, you may want to use Alagator to coagulate the dead algae. Be sure to backwash the filter before using Alagator.

For Fill Water with Iron:

Before adding shock or chlorine to the pool, use 32 oz. of Pool Season's Stain and Scale Prevention. After adding the chemical, check filter often for a rise in pressure. When pressure rises 5-7 lbs, backwash the filter. You will also want to use Ferritabs to help clear the water.
